Trained as an actor, Cristèle Alves Meira began her career as a theatre director. She directed two documentariesâSom & Morabeza (2008) in Cape Verde, and Born in Luanda (2010) in Angolaâbefore tackling short fiction films in Portugal: Sol Branco (2015); Campo de VÃboras (2016), which was selected for the Semaine de la Critique at the Festival de Cannes; InvisÃvel Herói (2019) and Tchau-Tchau (2021). She makes her feature-length directorial debut with Alma Viva (2022).
As she does every summer, little Salomé returns to her family village nestled in the Portuguese mountains for the holidays. As the vacation begins in a carefree atmosphere, her beloved grandmother suddenly dies. While the adults are tearing each other apart over the funeral, Salomé is haunted by the spirit of the one who was considered a witch.
