Born to Iranian parents in Ludwigsburg, Germany, in 1968, Sudabeh Mortezai grew up in Tehran and Vienna, and completed studies in theatre and film in Vienna and Los Angeles. Her feature-length directorial debut, Macondo (2014), had its premiere in the Competition at the Berlin International Film Festival. Joy (2018), her second feature, premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and received numerous prizes, including the Best Film Award at the London Film Festival and the Étoile d'Or at the Marrakech International Film Festival
Beate is an ambitious executive working at Europa, a mysterious corporation looking to expand into the Balkans. While seeming to promote philanthropy and investment in underdeveloped regions, Europa actually needs to buy up land from locals in a remote valley in Albania, using Beate as the main negotiator in this ambiguous mission. But, things don’t go as planned when she is challenged by Jetnor, a stubborn and spiritual farmer who refuses to leave the land of his ancestors.
