Young Jimena searches for her own identity through her relationship with her mother and grandmother, both of them middle-class white women, and the correspondence she keeps with her father, a foreign black man she resembles. In an attempt to break free from her feelings of displacement, Jimena rewrites her family ties, and creates new ways of experiencing the bonds of love, friendship and her work relationships. Through her gaze, Faraway Song addresses issues of class, family, tradition, race and gender.
