Maïmouna Doucouréâs short film Maman(s) (2015) was selected for nearly two hundred festivals worldwide and won more than sixty awards, including the Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, the Best Short Film award at the Toronto International Film Festival and the César Award for Best Short Film. In 2019, Doucouré was awarded the Gold Fellowship for Women by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts. Cuties (2020), her first feature-length film, won the Best Director award at Sundance and a Special Mention from the Generation Kplus International Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival. Hawa (2022) is her most recent film.
Fifteen-year-old Hawa lives alone with her gravely ill grandmother and fears she will be placed in another home by social services. So she hatches a plan to be adopted by someone she admires more than anyone elseâone of the most powerful women in the world. On her quest, Hawa meets several people who help her get closer to her dream.
