Rania Stephan was born in Beirut. Anchored in the turbulent reality of her home country, her documentary work brings a personal perspective to political events, 2022 SPECIAL SCREENINGS in which encounters are captured on film with compassion and humour. Her debut feature-length film, The Three Disappearances of Soad Hosni (2011), considered a modern classic, is internationally acclaimed and has won numerous prizes. In Fields of Words: Conversations with Samar Yazbek (2022) won the Best Film Award at the Villa Medici Film Festival.
This filmic dialogue between Syrian writer-in-exile Samar Yazbek and the f ilmmaker asks vital questions about cinema and literature in the face of war, death and violence. Weaving together a variety of visual and sonic elements, the film explores the writer’s work with her own tools: words. A pertinent poetic and political testimony of our troubled times.
