Karim Aïnouzâs directorial debut came with Madame Satã (2002), which was selected for Un Certain Regard at the Festival de Cannes. His other works include Nardjes A. (2020); Invisible Life (2019), which won the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes; Central Airport THF (2018), which won the Amnesty International Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival; Futuro Beach (2014); Silver Cliff (2011), a Cannes Directorsâ Fortnight selection; and I Travel Because I Have To, I Come Back Because I Love You (2009) and Love for Sale (2006), both of which were screened in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival.
January 2019. Filmmaker Karim Aïnouz decides to take a boat, cross the Mediterranean, and embark on his first journey to Algeria. Accompanied by the memory of Iracemaâhis late motherâand his camera, Aïnouz gives a detailed account of his journey to his fatherâs homeland, from the sea crossing, through his arrival in the Atlas Mountains in the northern region of Kabylia, to his return, interweaving past, present, and future.
