Paul Schrader was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1946. He earned his BA from Calvin College, and his MA from UCLA while working as a film critic and writing Transcendental Style in Film. He has written or directed more than thirty films, including four collaborations with Martin Scorsese. The first, Taxi Driver (1976), won the Palme d'Or at the Festival de Cannes. Among many others, his credits as writer-director include American Gigolo (1980), Cat People (1982), Mishima (1985), Affliction (1997), First Reformed (2017), for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, The Card Counter (2021) and Master Gardener (2022).
