Iranian director, screenwriter, and editor Jafar Panahi is commonly identified with the Iranian New Wave. Born in 1960, he made short films and worked as an assistant director for Abbas Kiarostami before achieving international recognition with his feature film debut, The White Balloon (1995), which had its premiere in the Directorsâ Fortnight at the Festival de Cannes and won the Caméra dâOr. He went on to make a string of acclaimed and award-winning films, including The Mirror (1997), The Circle (2000), Crimson Gold (2003), Offside (2006), This Is Not a Film (2011), Closed Curtain (co-director, 2013), Taxi (2015), Three Faces (2018) and No Bears (2022), which won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
No Bears portrays two parallel love stories. In both, the lovers are troubled by hidden, inevitable obstacles, the force of superstition and the mechanics of power.
