Born in Geneva, Carmen Jaquier studied graphic design before making her first short films and entering the Cantonal School of Art in Lausanne. Her graduation f ilm, The Girlsâ Grave, was awarded the Silver Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival in 2011. She went on to direct the short films Les Vagues and Le Bal des sirènes. Her short film La Rivière sous la langue and the collective feature Wonderland were selected for the Locarno Film Festival in 2015. She was the cinematographer of Emmanuelle Antilleâs documentary A Bright Light: Karen and the Process. Thunder (2022) is her first feature-length film.
Summer 1900, in a valley in southern Switzerland. Elisabeth, a seventeen-yearold novitiate, is about to take her vows when the sudden death of her elder sister forces her to leave the convent and return to the family farm she had left f ive years earlier. But Elisabeth is no longer a child. Stifled by the suffocating, strict rules of the village, and obsessed by the mysteries surrounding her sisterâs disappearance, she will fight for her right to experiment.
