Director's Biography

Jihan K was born in exile and raised in Paris while her father, a Libyan human rights lawyer, was the peaceful opposition leader to Qaddafi's regime. After her father disappeared from Cairo, her family lived between the United States and France, while her mother, a Syrian artist, fought for justice in an international campaign. Jihan obtained her BA in international and comparative politics with a concentration in human rights, philosophy, and international law, and her MA in art education and storytelling. My Father and Qaddafi, her first feature-length documentary, had its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.

In the presence of the film crew

In My Father and Qaddafi, director Jihan K pieces together a father she barely remembers. A human rights lawyers, Mansur Rashid Kikhia was Libya’s foreign minister and its ambassador to the United Nations. After serving in Muammar Qaddafi’s brutal regime, Kikhia defected from the government and became a peaceful opposition leader. To many, he could even replace Qaddafi; in 1993, however, he disappeared from his hotel in Egypt. Jihan’s mother searched for him for 19 years, until his body was found in a freezer near Qaddafi’s palace. Through encounters with her family, her father’s colleagues, and historical archives, Jihan’s search for the truth evolves into a deeper curiosity, drawing her closer to both her father and her Libyan identity.
