Maryam Touzani was born in Tangier. After closely participating in Much Loved and co-writing Razzia with Nabil Ayouch—in which she also starred—she directed her first feature, Adam, which was selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the Festival de Cannes and represented Morocco at the Academy Awards. In 2022, she directed The Blue Caftan, which was selected for Cannes and for the Marrakech International Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize, and shortlisted for the Oscars—a historic first for a Moroccan film. It won more than 60 awards worldwide and achieved the highest-ever international box-office takings for a Moroccan film. In 2023, Touzani was a member of the Official Competition jury at Cannes. Her most recent film, Calle Málaga, a Spanish-language drama starring Carmen Maura, had its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award.
Maria Angeles, a 79-year-old Spanish woman, lives alone in Tangier, in northern Morocco, where she enjoys her city and daily life. Her world is turned upside down when her daughter Clara arrives from Madrid to sell the apartment where Maria has always lived. Determined to stay in the city that watched her grow up, she does everything in her power to keep her home and recover the objects of a lifetime. Along the way, against all odds, she rediscovers love and desire.
