Biographie

Born in Beirut , Gabriel Yared abandoned law studies to attend the classes of Henri Dutilleux and Maurice Ohana at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, after which he spent a year-and-a-half in Rio de Janeiro working with Ivan Lins, the ambassador of modern bossa. On his return to Paris in 1973, he was drawn to the world of music and eventually wrote the music for Jean-Luc Godard’s Every Man for Himself. In the space of a few years, Yared began to collaborate with renowned filmmakers including Robert Altman, Jean-Jacques Annaud, for whose L’Amant he was awarded a César, Jean-Jacques Beineix, Costa-Gavras, Paul Schrader, Jean-Pierre Mocky, Michel Ocelot, and Anthony Minghella, for whom he wrote the score of The English Patient, which won him an Academy Award, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a Grammy Award. Latterly, Yared has worked with a new generation of celebrated directors, among them Xavier Dolan, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Angelina Jolie and Maïwenn.
