
Gus Van Sant is considered one of the key figures of American independent cinema. After his debut with Mala Noche, he achieved international fame with Drugstore Cowboy, which won four Independent Spirit Awards. In 1991, he presented My Own Private Idaho, which definitively secured his reputation. In 1997, he directed Good Will Hunting, which won the Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor (for Robin Williams) and Best Original Screenplay (for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck). In 2003, Van Sant won the Palme d’Or and the Best Director Award at the Festival de Cannes with Elephant. Milk received eight Oscar nominations, winning Best Actor (for Sean Penn) and Best Original Screenplay. His other credits include Restless, Promised Land, Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot, and Dead Man's Wire, his most recent feature film.
