Born in 1960, celebrated Iranian director and screenwriter Jafar Panahi is known for his critical films and work within the Iranian New Wave. He has faced significant backlash from the Iranian government, leading to a ban on filmmaking and travel since 2010; nevertheless, he has created influential works such as Taxi Tehran and The White Balloon. His films often feature a humanistic perspective, addressing underrepresented groups and the challenges of censorship and freedom of expression in Iran. It Was Just an Accident had its premiere at the Festival de Cannes, where it won the Palme d’or.
