Born in Palermo to a Sicilian father and an Algerian mother, Luca Guadagnino spent part of his childhood in Ethiopia. He made documentaries before moving into fiction with The Protagonists (1999). In 2009, he wrote and directed the critically acclaimed I Am Love, which was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture in a Non-English Language. After writing and directing the documentary Bertolucci on Bertolucci (2013), he directed A Bigger Splash (2014), starring Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, and Dakota Johnson, which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. Guadagnino then directed Call Me by Your Name (2016), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It was a critical and popular hit, receiving nominations for three Golden Globes, four BAFTAs, and four Oscars, including Best Film and Best Actor (for Timothée Chalamet); it won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The same year, Guadagnino directed Suspiria with Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson, which premiered at Venice. In 2020, he directed his first television series, We Are Who We Are. He reunited with Chalamet in 2022 for the feature film Bones and All, followed in 2024 by Challengers, starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist, and Queer, starring Daniel Craig. Luca Guadagnino recently wrapped After the Hunt, starring Andrew Garflied, alongside Julia Roberts, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Ayo Edebiri.
