
Born and raised in Madrid, Lucía Aleñar Iglesias is a writer-director based in Los Angeles. She holds a BFA in film from New York University and an MFA in screenwriting from Columbia University. Her short film Forastera was selected for La Semaine de la Critique at the Festival de Cannes, the Curtas Vila do Conde International Film Festival, Les Arcs Film Festival, and the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, and was nominated for a Gaudí Award. She is an alum of La Résidence at the Cannes Cinéfondation and received the ArteKino International Prize at the MIA Market. Forastera, which won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival, is her debut feature-length film.
Cata’s summer vacation is disrupted by the absurd and sudden death of her grandmother, which only Cata witnesses. Her grief shifts when she casually turns to playing make-believe, transforming into the deceased. What begins as a game of dress-up blurs the lines of reality as well as family roles.
