Andrew Dominik is an Australian film director and screenwriter known for his distinctive visual style and exploration of complex, often tragic characters. Born in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1967, he later moved to Australia, where he studied film at the Victorian College of the Arts. His debut feature Chopper (2000), based on the life of criminal Mark “Chopper” Read, established Dominik’s reputation for gritty realism and featured Eric Bana in the role that brought him international recognition. Dominik gained further acclaim with The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), a contemplative Western with Brad Pitt noted for its poetic cinematography. Dominik continued to examine moral ambiguity and disillusionment in Killing Them Softly (2012), again starring Pitt, and then delved into the psyche of fame and identity with Blonde (2022), a bold portrait of Marilyn Monroe starring Ana de Armas.
