Nadine Labaki is a Lebanese director and actor. In 2004, she wrote and developed Caramel, her first feature-length film, a joyfully irreverent ode to female solidarity, which became the most successful Lebanese film abroad. In 2008, she was named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Labaki continued exploring themes of women’s status and religious tensions with Where Do We Go Now?, a bold and universal fable about tolerance, which won several awards. Capernaum, her powerful, moving, and poignant story of damaged childhoods, refugees, and the flaws of a society that denies its humanity, was selected for the Official Competition of the Festival de Cannes, where it won the Jury Prize. The film was nominated for Golden Globe, BAFTA, and César Awards, and for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, when Labaki became the first Arabic-speaking woman nominated in this category. In 2019, Labaki chaired the Un Certain Regard jury at Cannes; she was a juror for the Official Competition at Cannes in 2024.
