A director and screenwriter, Narjiss Nejjar was born in Tangier. She studied filmmaking in Paris before working as an assistant director on several films. She made The Demand for Dignity, her first documentary, in 1994, followed by Khaddouj, Memories of Targha in 1996. In 2000, she founded the production company Terre Sud Films. She is also the author of the novel Cahiers d’empreintes, published in 1999. Her first feature-length fiction film, Cry No More (2003), was selected for numerous festivals, including the Festival de Cannes, where it screened in the Directors’ Fortnight. Her second fiction feature, Wake Up Morocco came in 2006. After contributing to the collective film Terminus des anges, she directed L’Amante du Rif in 2011. Since 2018, Nejjar has been Director of the Moroccan film library at the Centre Cinématographique Marocain in Rabat.
In a Berber land enclosed by a ring of mountains, Hala is the rebellious and surly leader of a village of women. She imposes her law and dictates the rules. One day, Hala’s mother, who was rounded up 25 years ago and has been forgotten in prison, returns—accompanied by a man, a young bus driver, an orphan, and a Sunday entertainer.
