England, 1580. Will, a penniless Latin teacher, meets Agnes, a free-spirited young woman. Fascinated by each other, the pair begin a passionate affair, eventually marrying and having three children. While Will tries his luck as a playwright in London, Agnes takes on all the domestic responsibilities alone. When tragedy strikes, once deeply united, the couple’s bond begins to falter. It is from their shared hardship, however, that the inspiration for a masterpiece is born.
