Yassine Fennane studied performing arts at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University before making his directorial debut with the short film Petite Blessure. He gained recognition through television films and the award-winning series Une heure en enfer. His acclaimed first feature film, Karyan Bollywood, screened internationally, and won awards at the Malmö Arab Film Festival, the Geneva International Film Festival, and the Tangier Film Festival. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he shot The Last Rehearsal in confinement. He returns to cinema with The Ants, confirming his place among Morocco’s most versatile filmmakers.
Three intertwined stories follow Félicité, a young migrant from sub-Saharan Africa, at the border of Morocco and Spain, near Melilla. After her friend’s tragic death, Félicité vows to honor her by returning to Tangier to earn money for a Christian burial. The second story centers on Hamid, an unscrupulous recruiter who exploits migrant workers, and whose deceit ultimately costs him his job. Against her husband’s wishes, Kenza, a wealthy young mother, hires Félicité as a nanny, which leads to escalating marital conflict and leaves Félicité facing despair.
