Palestinian filmmaker Kamal Aljafari studied at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and currently lives in Berlin. He has taught filmmaking at the New School in New York City and the German Film and Television Academy Berlin. He is a fellow at the Institute for Ideas and Imagination of Columbia University. In 2024, IndieLisboa presented a retrospective of his work. The same year, his short film UNDR was selected for the International Film Festival Rotterdam and A Fidai Film was presented at the Marrakech International Film Festival and at Visions du Réel, where it won the Grand Jury Prize. With Hasan in Gaza had its premiere at the Locarno Film Festival.
Three MiniDV tapes of life in Gaza recorded in 2001 were recently discovered. What started as a search for a former prison mate from 1989 led to an unexpected road trip from the north to the south of Gaza with Hasan, a local guide whose fate remains unknown. With Hasan in Gaza is a cinematic reflection on memory, loss, and the passage of time, capturing a Gaza of the past and lives that may never be found again.
